When to visit the flower fields & how
Soon the tulip fields will start to bloom all around the Netherlands. And even though some daffodill- and hyacinthfields will start first, the tulips follow in abundance turning the rural regions of the Netherlands into a colorful patchwork.
Depending on the weather, between start/half April until half May, when most flowers are cut.
You can easily drive around my country to find colorful fields by the road, but remember not to stand or walk in the flower fields without the farmer’s permission, as you can damage their livelihood and income! Therefore I'm happy to share some tips for respectful tulipfield photography.
It's NEVER ok to walk into a field without permission or jump the gate
If you see the farmer, check with him first to see if he's ok with you walking in between the flower rows, so he can decide for himself
Keep in mind that without permission you can damage the farmer's harvest and income, as you can bring across diseases to the flowers
Not all farmers are worried about that though and I know several who are ok with you walking through their fields, as long as stay in between the rows, and walk carefully without bruising or picking the flowers!
And of course you can also take great pics standing/or lying in front of the tulip field:)
When tulip mania starts you can find multi coloured flower fields spread out along the coast of The Hague andLeiden, all the way up to Alkmaar in the north. But also on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, in the Noordoostpolder, in Tulpenroute Flevolandand evenGroningenflower fields and tulip routes can be found.
But most of the fields around found along theBollenstreek and can be viewed from the road when driving through the small villages around Lisse, Hillegom, Sassenheim, Voorhout, de Zilk and Noordwijkerhout.
It's pure delight to drive past these fields by car, bike, or E-chopper, like I did many times, providing amazing photo opportunities! This is totally free to do and fine, as long as you don't enter the fields without permission.
There are however many misconceptions about taking pictures in random fields, which is usually NOT allowed! But don't despair, as it is still possible to take those Instagrammable shots in front or even in the fields, with permission of the farmer or at special locations.
To play it safe I would recommend to visit the special photography hotspots I also mentioned in this guide, like theTulips showgarden Voorhout ,KeukenhoforThe Tulip Barn. They are all situated near Lisse and you can even take pics here with props already placed in the tulip fields, like a cow, swing, chair, bike, tractor, a Fiat 500 or even a piano!
