Secluded Paradise with a Rocky Road

Pokohino Beach is easily one of my all-time favourite beaches in New Zealand, and for good reason, it’s one of those hidden gems that feels like paradise. Getting there, however, requires a little patience. The drive to the beach involves about 4 km of a rocky, uncomfortable gravel road. Honestly, I wasn’t prepared for it and almost turned back thinking I’d taken a wrong turn. It’s bumpy, but any vehicle can make it as long as you take it slow.

When you finally arrive at the car park, don’t think your journey’s over just yet! You’ll need to walk about 750 meters through the bushlands on a trail that’s a bit steep in spots but manageable for most. The walk itself is gorgeous, building up to the moment you catch your first glimpse of this stunning beach. As the trees and scrub open up, you’ll find a perfect photo spot right before the beach, trust me it’s worth snapping a pic here.

Once you hit the sand, the beach will welcome you with open arms. The water on the right side of the beach is calm, perfect for a swim, while the left side has a bit more wave action for those who like to jump in waves. For a little adventure, look for a small cave on the right side, which actually leads to another beach. Just make sure it's low tide and safe before attempting it, I didn’t go through myself but saw some other explorers who said it’s worth it. It’s a unique, peaceful spot that’s totally worth the effort to get there. Enjoy!
