Safety Tip #5

Medellín is an amazing place to explore, but you should know some of the safety tips about the specific neighborhoods in Medellín that you will likely visit!

• El Poblado: Probably the most popular neighborhood for tourists, and for a reason. It is amazing in el Poblado, but because it is by far the most popular neighborhood for foreigners, the thieves also know that as well. This neighborhood has a higher rate of pick pocketing and petty theft. So just do your due diligence and keep your belongings on yourself.

• Laureles: Probably the second most popular neighborhood for tourists. This neighborhood is much more walkable and is so wonderful. I definitely recommend you visit if you are in town. There are a couple tips though for Laureles. It is a popular neighborhood for coffee shops and coworking and many of these places have an indoor/outdoor sitting area. If you have the opportunity, choose the indoor sitting area if you have a computer that you are working on. It is definitely a safer place to work. Also, near the Stadium at night time, it is fun, but definitely take an uber home.

• El Centro: This is a great part of town if you want to see a lot of history, enjoy some theater, live music, and some major tourist destinations here. But after about 5pm, I would go with a local who knows their way around or think about leaving el Centro if you are on your own. I also just recommend in general, unless you are an experienced traveler, to visit this area with a tour guide. It can be really overwhelming and there aren't too many tourists in this area, so definitely check it out with one of the amazing tours on the Things to Do list.

• Envigado: Envigado is growing into a really popular area for visitors. It is actually a municipality, so not technically part of Medellin, but essentially in Medellin. Envigado has lots to see, but there is definitely less English spoken in this area. It's probably the safest part of town, but if you have insecurities of exploring a different part of town with limited English, just keep this in mind.
