Muningi Gorge is a bit further out from Johannesburg, but great for a proper weekend adventure with hiking trails, quad biking, zip-lining and more.
There are three trail options of 3, 5, and 8km respectively and permits can be bought on arrival. The latter two trails are moderately difficult and with some technical pieces requiring balance to go over some stepping stones. You can look forward to great views looking down into the gorge, and keep an eye out for loose porcupine quills! There were a few scattered along the trail when I went.
The more “technical” 8 km trail is not recommended for beginners but provides for an enjoyable hike and loops along the top of the mountain. Just be sure to bring a hat as it isn't well covered.
At the end of the day, you'll circle back to the reception where you can order food and drinks by a flowing dam.
Pro tip: Adventure Zone have two branches, so be sure to call Adventure Zone Cullinan before you go to let them know you're coming.
