Keldur is a turf house with a church beside in South Iceland close to Hella and the volcano Mt. Hekla.

At Keldur farm lived historically important vikings like Ingjaldur Höskuldsson who is mentioned in the Njáll Saga. He lived in Keldur around the year 1000AD. This farm is the oldest original turf house building of the country. In the summer months it is possible to take a look inside the buildings but even in wintertime a visit pays off. The flair due to the rough surroundings of the farm is very special. When I visited the turf house we were the only one there. I enjoyed the scenery of the surrounding mountains and landscape which was formed by past eruptions. And also the still active volcano Mt. Hekla is not far away.

To visit Keldur you drive up to the parking lot and walk the last 100 meters. The site belong to the National Museum Historic Buildings Collection but the farm beside it is still cultivated. Please respect the privacy of the farmers and do not enter the farm close by.

Entrance fee of the houses: 1,500ISK
