Starting Point
Trondenes is an excellent starting point for exploring the "Stien Langs Sjøen" (The Trail Along the Sea). However, as the trail is long and spans multiple neighborhoods, offering a variety of impressions and activities, it's up to each individual to decide where they want to begin, explore, and end their experience of the trail.

Directions to Trondenes

From Harstad city center, follow road 83 north. At the Sama roundabout, turn right and follow the signs to Trondenes Church. Parking is available either at the church or near the crematorium further up.

Trail Description

The "Stien Langs Sjøen" offers a wealth of hiking and activity options. You can walk along the trail and take in the diverse surroundings. Along the way, there are numerous opportunities to pause on a bench or a quay. You can also find a peaceful spot along the trail, whether in a rural setting or closer to the city, alone or with others, and simply enjoy the pleasant atmosphere.

Each visit can start at a different location, offering a new experience every time. There are plenty of places and activities to explore, making this trail suitable for the whole family.

Highlights of the Trail

The trail features a variety of experiences and activities. How these are perceived depends on factors like age, mood, the season, and weather conditions. As such, it's challenging to pinpoint highlights that will appeal to everyone.

Still, you'd have to be quite indifferent not to appreciate some of the following:

  • Ruins of a Soviet POW camp

  • The medieval Trondenes Church

  • A flower and herb garden

  • A medieval farm with livestock

  • Close encounters with nature (sky, sea, and mountains)

  • Shipyard industry

  • Museums and art installations

  • A marina

  • Fishing opportunities from the quay

  • A cultural center

  • Playgrounds and recreational areas

  • Activities on the water and in the city

Difficulty and Time

Most of the trail consists of well-maintained paths, roads, and promenades. However, some sections run alongside trafficked roads without designated bike or walking lanes but with reduced speed limits for safety.

This versatile trail allows for leisurely exploration, making it ideal for all fitness levels and interests. Depending on where you choose to begin and end, your time spent will vary, offering flexibility for short strolls or longer hikes.

You can either park at Trondenes Church and walk towards the city, or if you don’t have a car, the trail is accessible from Harstad city center. See the attached map for details.
