Pico da Barrosa: One of São Miguel’s Best Viewpoints
If you’re road-tripping through São Miguel , there’s one stop you can’t miss, Pico da Barrosa. It’s one of the highest points on the island and offers some of the most jaw-dropping views you’ll find. We’re talking rolling green hills, volcanic craters, and on a clear day, a view that stretches all the way to the ocean. If you’re chasing the best São Miguel viewpoints, this one needs to be on your list.
How to get there? 🗺️
The good news? You don’t have to hike for hours to reach this incredible spot. Pico da Barrosa is right off the EN5-2A road, the scenic route that takes you up to Lagoa do Fogo. If you’re driving from Ponta Delgada, it’ll take you about 30 minutes to get there.
There’s a small parking area at the viewpoint, so you can hop out, soak in the views, snap a few photos, and continue your journey. Trust me you will stand there in complete awe (I did), wondering if you’ve somehow teleported to another planet.
The View from Pico da Barrosa
This is one of those places where you don’t need filters. From up here, you get a panoramic view of Lagoa do Fogo, the iconic crater lake that sits in the heart of São Miguel. The way the deep blue water contrasts with the lush green crater walls is next-level stunning.
Turn around, and you’ll see the coastline stretching out in the distance, with rolling hills and winding roads cutting through the landscape. If you’re lucky and the weather cooperates, you might even catch a sea of clouds below you, making you feel like you’re standing on top of the world.
São Miguel’s weather can be unpredictable, and fog loves to crash the party, especially at higher elevations. If you want the best chance of clear views, aim for:
Early morning before the clouds roll in
Late afternoon for softer lighting and fewer crowds
Checking the webcams for Lagoa do Fogo before heading up is also a good move.
