Message from Where The Kids Roam

In a city full of famous temples and shrines, Egara Tenjin manages to feel like a real discovery. Imagine finding a shrine from 1104 that's dedicated to basically the patron deity of students and scholars (Tenjin was actually a real guy - Sugawara no Michizane - who got such a raw deal in life that they had to deify him to calm his angry ghost!).

The story behind this place is fascinating - it was apparently built before Kamakura even became the powerhouse city we read about in history books. Those bright vermilion buildings you see today aren't the originals (the place went through some rough patches over the centuries), but they've done an amazing job bringing it back to life.
