Seasons and weather are extremely important when visiting Jackson Hole. The area has 4 distinct seasons and the landscape and things to vary greatly across each season. This guide is designed specifically for summer travel but here's a brief overview of each season and rhe best times to visit.

Spring (April to early-June):
Spring in Jackson Hole is a time of renewal, with average temperatures ranging from 30°F to 60°F. Snow begins to melt, and the valley starts to bloom in early-June. Visitation is relatively low during this season and many hotels, restaurants and activity providers close during this time of year. Locals nickname these months "mud-season" where its too snowy to hike but too muddy to ski. Hiking trails are likely to be closed but wildlife like elk, bison, and moose are more active and visible. The nearby national parks are less crowded, but some roads in both Yellowstone and Grand Teton may still be inaccessible due to snow. We usually recommend avoiding visitng Jackson Hole in April and May as there's not much to do; however, if your looking to experience a near-empty Grand Teton National Park and go for a driving tour, this time can still be enjoyable.

Summer (mid-June to September):
Summer is peak season in Jackson Hole, and for good reason. With warm temperatures averaging 70°F to 85°F, the valley is bustling with visitors, and the national parks are at their most accessible, offering hiking, biking, rafting, fishing, and so much more. Wildlife sightings are plentiful, and many outdoor festivals and events take place. The weather is perfect for exploring the area’s many trails, lakes, and rivers, making this the best time for outdoor activities. Prices for accommodations are at their highest during this season and campground reservations should be made in advance if possible. Since this guide is designed with summer travel in mind, here are unique qualities of each period of summer.

Mid-Late June:

Personally this is my favorite time of year in Jackson Hole. Most activities are back open for the season, the valley is in bloom and everything is a vibrant green color. Some hiking trails in the high alpine may still be closed to snow but the valley and roads are very accessible.

Early July:

The wildflowers hit their peak bloom around the 4th of July as the summer visitation truly reaches it's peak in July and early-August. At this point in the season, hiking trails are mostly thawed out and summer events like the Framers Market are in full swing.

Late July-August:

Backpacking season finally arrives in mid-late July. The snow has finally melted in the high alpine and this is the most popular time for multi day backpacking trips like the Teton Crest Trail or mountaineering adventures like climbing the Grand Teton. By August, the valley has usually lost most of the vibrant green color but it's still an incredible playground for adventure.

September:

You really witness the seasons change from summer to fall during the month of September. Early September feels a lot like summer but by late September, the first snow of the season has arrived and most summer activities have closed for the season.

Fall (October to November):
Fall offers cooler temperatures, ranging from 30°F to 60°F, and is a quieter time to visit. The crowds thin out, and the changing foliage creates stunning views, especially in Grand Teton National Park. It's a prime time for wildlife viewing, with elk rutting season in full swing. Many services start to wind down, but fall offers a peaceful, scenic experience perfect for photography and hiking. Peak leaves usually hit sometime in mid-October and last for about 2 weeks. Once November begins, snow is here and the fall mud-season returns with many restaurants, hotels and activities closing before the winter.

Winter (December to March):
Winter transforms Jackson Hole into a snow-covered wonderland, with average temperatures ranging from 10°F to 30°F. It’s a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts, with world-class skiing and snowboarding at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The crowds are focused on winter activities, and the town has a cozy, festive atmosphere. Snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and wildlife viewing (especially bison and elk) are also popular. Winter is the quietest season in terms of general tourism but is perfect for those seeking an active winter getaway.
