Want to go camping in the Adirondacks without spending a dime?

Moose River Plains has 140 primitive campsites deep in the remote Adirondacks wilderness. All sites are first come, first served. No reservations accepted.

There are two entrances for the main Moose River Plains Road, one near Inlet off Limekiln Road and the other at Wakely Dam Recreational Area at the end Cedar River Road.

The roads leading into the campground areas are the main Moose River Plains Road, Rock Dam Road, Otter Brook Road and Indian Lake Road. They are open to public vehicles from Memorial Day to the end of deer hunting season (around December). If there's snow on the ground, you should have a 4x4 or snow chains on your tires to enter the area.

The campsites are located off the main roads, as well as short side roads. Most of the sites have an area for your tent, a fire pit and a picnic table.

RVs and trailers are allowed from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend.

If you have a group of 10-20 people or want to stay more than 3 nights in a row, then you need to obtain a permit from a forest ranger. Groups of 20 or more are prohibited.

This is a primitive, wilderness area. There are no public facilities here. **Please remember to follow Leave No Trace principles, by packing out all your trash, staying on trails, and never feeding the wildlife. **
