Brougham Castle, located in Cumbria, England, was built in the early 13th century by Robert I de Vieuxpont on the site of a Roman fort. It served as a strategic military base during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Despite periods of neglect and decay, including a stint as a picturesque ruin, the castle was briefly restored in the 17th century before falling into disrepair once again. Today, maintained by English Heritage, Brougham Castle stands as a reminder of its rich history amidst the scenic countryside of northern England.
