San Antonio de Areco is a traditional town 120 kilometers from Buenos Aires and one of the best day trips to experience gaucho life in Argentina.

This day tour includes a brief visit to the impeccably maintained town center - including silversmith workshops and the main square - before spending the day riding horses and indulging in an asado lunch at Estancia El Ombu.

If you have time to spend a whole weekend here you won't regret it but if you're short on time, this is my favorite day trip from Buenos Aires.

Tradition Day: Every November 10th is Dia de la Tradicion in Argentina and since San Antonio de Areco prides itself as the cradle of tradition, they host the largest parade and rodeo on the weekend closest to the 10th of November every year. If you are in Argentina that weekend, get yourself to Areco. Rent a driver or car for the day, if you want to stay overnight reserve your accommodation well in advance. It's a sight you'll never forget - thousands of gauchos on horseback parading through town!
