Capanna Basodino CAS is a mountain hut in the Ticino region of southern Switzerland. It's located at the Robiei mountain area, at the far end of the Maggia valley north of Locarno.

We ate lunch there before hiking in the area and enjoyed it so much, we would go back just the food. The apero platter with locally cured meats and cheeses from a nearby alpine dairy was so tasty, I didn't want it to end.

They bake fantastic bread using traditional Ticino recipes. We bought some for our picnic on the trail the next day.

They have 59 beds in their typical mountain dormitory. You can book rooms on the SAC site.

Italian is the main language here and no one spoke English or German when we visited. But we figured it out.

How to get there

You can reach the mountain hut by riding the Robiei cable car the mountain. Then about a 10 min walk just below the cable car station.

Robiei cable car is in S. Carlo, Val Maggia. There is parking adjacent to cable car: 46°24’37.1″N 8°31’46.4″E. 1hr drive from Locarno. Bus stop: S. Carlo, Funivia
