Welcome to the delightful world of Scotland's puffins! Known for their charm and photogenic appeal, these seabirds enchant visitors during a short yet magical period each year. Capturing a glimpse of these cute creatures demands a bit of planning, but the reward is an unforgettable encounter with these lovable avian residents.

When is the Best Time to See Puffins?

Puffins return to land for breeding during the Spring and Summer, offering a narrow window of approximately four months, from April to July. By July, you may witness pufflings (young puffins) outside their burrows, providing a better chance to observe them.

Optimal viewing times are late afternoon, early evening, and even early mornings, depending on location and the puffins' feeding habits.

Where to Find Them?

Scotland offers various locations where you can marvel at puffins up close. Here are some prime spots to catch a glimpse of these adorable seabirds:

Handa Island

Accessible via a short boat ride from Tarbet on the north-west coast, Handa Island is a stunning wildlife reserve offering a serene escape. The island boasts easy walking trails around epic sea cliffs, providing excellent opportunities to observe hundreds of nesting puffins. The ferry costs £15 per person (cash only), and once on the island, you can spend the full day exploring at your own pace.

The Treshnish Isles - Lunga

Lunga, part of the Treshnish Isles and often paired with a trip to Staffa and Fingal's Cave, is renowned for its vast wildlife population. Visitors can get remarkably close to the puffins, making it ideal for capturing stunning photographs, even without sophisticated camera equipment. Ticket prices for tours to Staffa can vary, with most trips allowing a few hours on the island.

Isles of May, Fidra and Craigleith

Located close to Edinburgh and accessible from North Berwick or Anstruther harbour in Fife, these small islands offer convenient and accessible puffin viewing. Ferry tickets cost approximately £15-£30, depending on advance booking or same-day purchase.

Shetland Islands - Samburg Head

While more challenging to reach, Samburgh Head in Shetland offers the most accessible spot for viewing puffins, particularly for visitors with reduced mobility. Shetland, in general, is home to thousands of rare seabirds, offering a unique wildlife experience.

Remember, wherever you choose to visit, please respect the puffins and their nesting areas, maintaining a respectful distance to avoid disrupting their routines.
