Edinburgh’s castle is hard to miss wherever you are in the city, perched on top on over a 700 million year old extinct volcano.

So chances are if you - are visiting here, you’ll want to visit this amazing landmark.

Here are our top tips for going to Edinburgh Castle.

🎫 WHERE TO BUY TICKETS:

  • Tickets can sell out in advance – so you might want to think about booking them online before you visit (and to miss the queues).

  • They range from £15.50 - £19.50 for adults, £11.40-£15.50 for concessions (65+), and £0.00 - £11.40 for children (aged 7-15). Children under 7 go free but a ticket is still needed.

  • Or, you can get free tickets as part of St Andrews Day celebrations in November.

🗓️ WHEN TO VISIT?

  • The castle opens at 9.30 am each day. We’d recommend getting there early so you can wander around without big crowds (like we did), or time your visit so you can see the One o’Clock Gun being fired.

  • New Year and the Festival both have fireworks!

⏱️ HOW LONG DO I NEED TO VISIT?

  • You’ll want around 2 hours to see the whole thing, but you can easily spend more time in some of the museums.

⭐️ OUR FAVOURITE BITS: And finally, here are some of our favourite parts of the castle:

  • The Great Hall – located in the heart of the castle in Crown Square.

  • The Royal Palace – see where Kings and Queens lived.

  • Prisoners of War – head to the vaults below Crown Square and see where hundreds of prisoners of war were kept.

  • Scottish national War memorial – see the memorial to those who lost their lives in war and conflict.

  • See the Scottish Crown Jewels – the oldest Crown jewels in Britain are on display in the Crown Room. This includes the Stone of Destiny which was used for the recent coronation.

  • Enjoy the views over the city – due to its position on a hill, the castle is a great vantage point to see Edinburgh! You can see Arthur’s Seat, Calton Hill, and down to Princes Street.
