The Namib Desert's mysterious "fairy circles" have been studied and debated by ecologists for over half a century. Spreading across 1,100 miles of arid grasslands in Southern Africa, these strange circular patches of barren land are known to contain no mythical beings – just an answer beholden to science. Recent research has found that these patches of save the grasses at their borders from competition with each other by creating a vacuum system which draws any water towards them. While the evidence brought forth from this study is a step forward in understanding the mystery of fairy circles, there is still more to uncover about these fascinating rings of life - including areas where a different species of grass form into even larger circles of their own. The deepening knowledge of the Namib Desert's enigmatic swaths is absolutely worth exploring – who knows what wonders lie within.
