Eldfell is a volcanic cone on Heimaey island in Iceland that unexpectedly erupted in January 1973, causing chaos for the residents. The eruption led to the evacuation of the entire population, with lava flows destroying homes and threatening the island's main income source - its fishing harbor. Despite the destruction, the islanders managed to cool the advancing lava flow using sea water, saving the harbor.
Now it's a popular hike for it's impressive views from the top. It takes around 30-60 minutes to hike to the top.
