Located 6 hours north of West Yellowstone, Glacier National Park offers a variety of experiences throughout the summer. Whether you're an avid hiker, wildlife enthusiast, or simply want to enjoy breathtaking alpine scenery, this iconic park has something for everyone. However, it’s important to plan ahead, as trail conditions, road closures, and park access can vary greatly depending on the season.

When to Visit:

Summer is the best time to visit Glacier National Park for hiking and driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road because it offers the most accessible conditions. Most trails, including those at higher elevations like Grinnell Glacier and the Highline Trail, are snow-free and open for exploration from late-June to September. The weather is generally mild, perfect for hiking and enjoying stunning alpine scenery. Additionally, Going-to-the-Sun Road, the park’s iconic scenic drive, generally opens around late June to early July, depending on snowmelt and weather conditions, and remains open until mid-September to early October.

Road Closures:

During winter (typically late October to June), Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed entirely to vehicles due to snow, although parts of it are accessible for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

Other park roads, such as those leading to the North Fork or Many Glacier, may have seasonal closures due to snow or weather-related conditions. Always check road conditions on the Glacier National Park website before your visit.

General Tips for Visiting Glacier:

  • Prepare for Weather Variability: The weather in Glacier can change rapidly, especially in the higher elevations. Always bring layers, rain gear, and sturdy footwear for hiking.

  • Wildlife: The park is home to diverse wildlife, including bears, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats. Always practice bear safety by carrying bear spray and storing food properly.

  • Park Entrance Fees: The entrance fee to Glacier National Park is typically around $35 for a 7-day pass. Annual passes are also available for frequent visitors.

  • Accessibility: While most of the park's main attractions are accessible via car, those seeking a more remote experience will find opportunities for backcountry camping, hiking, and exploration. Be sure to prepare with the proper gear if venturing into less developed areas of the park.
