Tjörnin lake is a great spot to view a variety of bird life swimming around, see traditional Icelandic houses lined along the shore, or to just sit and relax. For many vistors to Reykjavík, they don’t expect to see such a large body of water in the downtown area. Ducks, swans, and other types of birds live in the lake year round.
During the winter when the lake freezes, you can see residents ice skating or walking on the ice. The long summer nights are a great opportunity to walk by the lake and get a shot of the sun reflecting on the water.
Historic buildings, The National Gallery of Iceland, Fríkirkjan í Reykjavík (The Free Church of Reykjavík), Reykjav;ik City Hall, and Iðnó culture house are all around this lake.
Because tjörnin is easy to access by foot, car, or any other form of transportation, a variety of visitors can enjoy this spot. The area surrounding the pond is pedestrian-friendly, and there are many restaurants, cafes, and shops nearby, making it an ideal spot to take a break and enjoy the city.
