Akureyrarkirkja is a striking Lutheran church located in the center of Akureyri, a small city in northern Iceland. Designed by Guðjón Samúelsson and completed in 1940, it is one of the most prominent landmarks in the city. The interior of the church has numerous unique features, such as Ásmundur Sveinsson's bas-reliefs on the nave balcony, an altarpiece designed by Danish artist Edvard Lehmann and a 3200 pipe organ.
Noted Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen is memorialised in a replica of his work, the angel baptismal font; while Italian white marble is used in the baptismal font made by Florentine sculptor Corrado Vigni. A visit to Akureyrarkirkja offers a unique glimpse into Icelandic history and culture.
