Iceland’s 3rd highest waterfall is not to be missed if you go to East Iceland. Hengifoss is situated in a stunning gorge, surrounded by towering cliffs, basalt columns, and lush vegetation, making it a perfect location for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. What makes this waterfall stand out among others is that the cliffs surrounding the waterfall are made up of colorful layers of volcanic rock, creating a mesmerizing contrast of red, black, and white. The waterfall's basalt columns also add to the area's unique geological features, providing visitors with a rare glimpse into Iceland's fascinating natural history. This waterfall is a great for hikers and nature lovers. The area surrounding the waterfall is home to several scenic hiking trails, each offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including another waterfall that you will encounter on the way up to Hengifoss, which is called Litlanesfoss. It takes about an hour one way to hike there. The beginning of the trail is uphill, so be mindful of that. Often, the East can be foggy. If you encounter a lot of fog on the day you choose to go, it might be a little hard to see the full beauty of the waterfall.
