One of the most fascinating and sad things about Barnafoss waterfalls is the legend behind them. According to Icelandic folklore, a woman once lived near the waterfalls with her two children. One day, while the woman was away, the children tried to cross the river via a stone bridge but fell into the falls and drowned. Some say that the mother, grief-stricken by the loss of her children, cursed the bridge so that anyone else who crossed it would also fall to their deaths, like her children.

Whether by chance or fate, the bridge was shattered by an earthquake, so one could ever cross it again. From this story, the waterfalls were known as Barnafoss, which means "children's falls."

These beautiful and unique waterfalls are known for their striking blue color and unique rock formations. The waterfalls flow through a narrow gorge and into the Hvítá River, creating a breathtaking sight to behold.

Like it’s nearby waterfall neighbor Hraunfossar, which is in walking distance of these two, you can explore the area around Barnafoss waterfalls by walking along the well-marked trails that lead to various viewpoints of the falls. The trails are easy to navigate, making them suitable for visitors of all ages and fitness levels.

Barnafoss waterfalls are also located near other popular tourist destinations, including the Hraunfossar waterfalls and the Deildartunguhver hot springs.

From the parking lot, you can easily walk to Barnafoss and Hraunfossar.
