Hverfjall is a colossal tephra cone volcano that rises majestically from the enchanting landscape of the Mývatn region. Experiencing the sheer magnitude and beauty of this natural marvel makes it worth the stop.

In just about 20 minutes you can hike to the rim and be rewarded with a beautiful view over Lake Myvatn, Dimmuborgir and the surrounding lava fields, especially when the sky is clear.

With a diameter of approximately one kilometer and a perfectly circular shape, Hverfjall exudes an otherworldly ambiance that will transport you to a realm of ancient legends and geological marvels. The vast crater of Hverfjall stretches out before you, revealing a lunar-like expanse that evokes a sense of awe and wonder. The rugged beauty of the surrounding lava fields, dotted with vibrant hues of moss and lichen, creates a stark contrast against the dark volcanic rock, making it a photographer's paradise.

Beyond the geological marvels, Hverfjall is also a sanctuary for biodiversity. The surrounding Mývatn Nature Reserve teems with life, making it a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. From the graceful flight of Arctic terns to the playful antics of puffins, the skies above Hverfjall are a symphony of avian wonders. Take a moment to soak in the tranquility of the region and appreciate the delicate balance between volcanic forces and the resilience of nature.

Hverfjall erupted 4500 years ago and spewed ash all over the area. The area is fragile, so please stay on the paths and do not tear up the moss. It takes years to grow back.
