What you’ll do

This Catskills road trip is designed to be the ultimate outdoor long-weekend getaway.

This 4-day road trip is perfectly tailored for adventure seekers and nature lovers. It will take you to charming towns, tranquil rivers, craft breweries, and natural wonders that look like they're from somewhere far from Upstate NY.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Nearest airport: John F. Kennedy (JFK) airport in NYC or Albany International Airport (ALB) in Albany

Best time to go: This itinerary is specifically designed to be completed from Thursday - Sunday between April - November due to limited operating hours at some breweries and tour companies.

However, I included substitutions in the daily descriptions (where necessary), in case your availability is a little bit different.

May - July are the best time to visit for waterfalls.

Mid-June - early Sept is best for swimming, camping, and hiking October is the best time to visit for fall foliage. Here's my guide on when/where to see the best fall colors in Upstate New York.

May - July is black fly season in the mountains. Black fly season typically lasts from mid-May to mid-July.

How to get around: You'll be doing a lot of driving over these 4 days, so you'll definitely need to rent a car to complete this itinerary!

Alternatively, you could rent a campervan, but Upstate NY isn't very RV/camper van friendly and finding open campsites can be difficult in the summer.

**ITINERARY OVERVIEW **

Day 1: Big Indian and Phoenicia Day 2: Kerhonkson and New Paltz Day 3: Waterfalls and hiking near Woodstock Day 4: Sundown Wild Forest

Total miles to drive over 4 days: 260.5 miles (419 km) Total drive time over 4 days: 6 hours 17 minutes

Stop 1: Check into Eastwind Oliverea Valley Lushna Cabin - Your first stop on your Catskills road trip will be to check in and drop off your things at Eastwind Oliverea Valley, which is just over two hours north-west of New York City.

Follow scenic Route 28 to get to Eastwind Oliverea Valley. This scenic highway takes you through the heart of the Catskill Park where you'll pass lush forests, sparkling rivers, charming towns, and roadside attractions.

The hotels in this itinerary are hand picked just for you, but feel free to browse for a different one that best suits your price point and available dates

**Other glamping spots in the area are: **

  • Autocamp Catskills

  • Treetopia

  • Bellfire Farm

  • Eastwind Hotel Windham

  • Stop 2: Phoenicia - Next, back track just a little bit to the town of Phoenicia. Eastwind Oliverea Valley has a restaurant on site that's mainly just open for dinner. So Phoenicia is a good place to stop at the grocery store to stock up on snacks or any other supplies you need for the weekend.

  • Stop 3: Peakamoose Restaurant - When you get hungry, for at Peakamoose Restaurant, a local favorite serving creative farm-to-table dishes. You won't need a reservation for their bar room, but you WILL need a reservation for their main dining room.

I definitely recommend grabbing a table in the main dining room if you can, so you'll want to call early to make a reservation the day before or when they open at 5PM.
