Fosdinovo is home to one of the best-preserved castles in the Lunigiana, the 12th centrury Malaspina Castle of Fosdinovo.

Fosdinovo was the gateway to the Lunigiana from the sea, and its position was perfect for maintaining control of the region's outlet to the sea.

The ideal positioning and the landmark castle made it a target in WWII. The "Museo Audiovisivo della Resistenza" is dedicated to retaining an archive the work of the resistance fighters against fascism.

The exhibition is organized chronologically, taking the visitor from the rise of fascism to Liberation, passing through the Nazi genocides, the civil opposition, and finally through the dramatic episodes of war and deportations.

The museum is located just outside Fosdinovo, at via Prato 6.

Near the castle, you'll also want to visit the the 13th century Parish Church of San Remigio. It remains the main center of worship for the town.

Hungry? A highly-rated restaurant in Fosdinovo is right across from the castle. Try Trattoria Quinta Terra at Via Papiriana 1a.

The flatbread/crepe known as testaroli is popular all over the Lunigiana, but the folks in Fosinovo have a variation that's smaller and stuffed rather than taking a sauce.

If your travel plans include a stint in the Lunigiana around the begining of July, be sure to see the Medieval Festival of Fosdinovo. It's the most evocative I've seen in the Lunigiana.

Enjoy Fosdinovo!
