In the footsteps of a famous Czech writer in Prague
Prague, the city of a thousand spires, is not only a place of countless historical sites but also a labyrinth of narrow streets that hide history and mystery. One of the most intriguing figures that made Prague famous is Franz Kafka, the celebrated writer whose work influenced 20th-century literature. In this blog post, we'll follow in the footsteps of Franz Kafka and discover places that were not only witnesses to his life but also sources of inspiration for his works.
Our journey begins at the Staroměstské náměstí - Old Town Square - where in one of the picturesque houses, Franz Kafka was born. The House at the Minute, adorned with beautiful sgrafitto on its façade, is where Kafka spent the early years of his life. Today, this building is part of a literary museum that offers visitors a unique insight into Kafka's early work.
From the Old Town Square, we move to the Židovská čtvrť - Jewish Quarter - where Kafka spent many years of his life. We'll walk through the narrow alleys that reflect the Gothic and mysterious atmosphere that was so inspiring to Kafka. We'll also visit the Starý Židovský Hřbitov - Old Jewish Cemetery - and the Maisel Synagogue, where you can explore exhibits dedicated to the Jewish community that lived in Prague.
Close to the bustling National Street, don’t miss the striking kinetic sculpture by David Černý, known as the Franz Kafka - Otočná Hlava - "K" - Socha Davida Černého - Kafka’s Rotating Head. This mesmerizing artwork, made of 42 rotating layers, captures the complexity and ever-changing nature of Kafka’s identity and his writings, adding a modern twist to our exploration of Kafka's Prague.
Kafka was known for his interest in the café culture that was flourishing in Prague during his time. Café Louvre on the National Avenue, where Kafka often sat with friends and debated literature, remains a popular spot for coffee and history lovers. Visit this historical place and enjoy the atmosphere of the times when Kafka frequented it.
Do not forget to visit the Muzeum Franze Kafky - Franz Kafka Museum - located near Lesser Town Square. The museum offers a rich exhibition that details Kafka's life, his personal items, and first editions of his works. The exhibition will help you better understand how Prague influenced his writing and how it became an inseparable part of his literary world.
