🇬🇧 This historic Ottoman bridge from the 15th century has an interesting history: Because it was not originally built in the place it's standing now! In 1965, authorities decided to build a hydropower plant and create an artificial lake in Gorica where the bridge was located. So, they just flooded the area and the bridge was submerged and underwater for a whole year! Until someone decided that this was maybe not the best idea and the lake was emptied for two months to dismantle the bridge stone by stone and transport it to a nearby field. Only in 1970, the relocation and reconstruction of the bridge began, and it was re-opened two years later in the Trebinje suburb it's standing in now. Because of its relocation, Arslanagić Bridge can never obtain UNESCO World Heritage status, which is really a shame since it's such a beautiful building and this would surely help with future maintenance!

🇩🇪 Diese historische osmanische Brücke aus dem 15. Jahrhundert hat eine absurde Hintergrundgeschichte: Sie wurde nämlich ursprünglich nicht an der Stelle gebaut, an der sie jetzt steht! Im Jahr 1965 beschlossen die Behörden, in Gorica, wo sich die Brücke befand, ein Wasserkraftwerk zu bauen und einen künstlichen See anzulegen. Also wurde das Gebiet einfach geflutet, und die Brücke war ein ganzes Jahr lang unter Wasser – bis endlich jemand sage: Halt, das geht nicht so! Der See wurde zwei Monate geleert, um die Brücke Stein für Stein abzubauen und auf ein nahe gelegenes Feld zu transportieren. Erst 1970 wurde mit der Verlegung und dem Wiederaufbau der Brücke begonnen, und zwei Jahre später wurde sie in dem Vorort von Trebinje, in dem sie jetzt steht, wiedereröffnet. Aufgrund ihrer Verlegung kann die Arslanagić-Brücke niemals den Status eines UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes erhalten, was wirklich schade ist…
