The Tatar Mosque in 40 Totorių is one of the oldest and most fascinating mosques in Lithuania. Located on the outskirts of Vilnius, the 40 Totorių village is home to this beautiful mosque, which was constructed in the late 14th century by Tatars who were brought there by Grand Duke Vytautas after a victorious battle. The mosque has a traditional square floor plan with a roof topped with an octagonal tall tower. Mosque is unusually divided in half, having women and men prayer rooms side by side. Inside, walls are adorned with verses from the Quran inscribed using calligraphy, and Persian rugs cover the floors. There is also a mihrab, a wall niche that points towards Mecca and serves as a reminder to Muslims to pray in that special direction. The mosque is adjacent to an ancient Muslim cemetery, where graves are shaped like circles or ovals and made of dirt and stones. Paying homage to their patron, the Tatar community erected a memorial stone in honor of the Grand Duke upon the 600th anniversary of their presence in the area
