A Northern Lights boat tour in Nuuk is the perfect way to experience one of nature’s most mesmerizing phenomena in an intimate, serene setting. The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, have captivated people for centuries, and in the Arctic, the spectacle feels even more magical.

On this exclusive new tour, you'll embark on a nighttime adventure when other boats are docked for the evening. The tour takes you out into the cold Arctic night, far from the city’s light pollution, in search of the elusive Northern Lights.

  • Departure & Scenic Views: The journey begins at the Tide water stairs. From here, the boat heads toward Akia, offering a beautiful view of Nuuk's skyline under a dark, unpolluted sky. It's the perfect backdrop for capturing those first moments of peace and excitement.

  • Deep into the Fjords: As the boat ventures deeper into the fjord, you will be completely surrounded by the tranquility of the Arctic night. Here, the only light is the boat’s, and we make several stops along the way. At each stop, the engine will be turned off, and you can simply relax and enjoy the stunning night sky.

  • Clear View of the Northern Lights: The absence of city lights gives you the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights in their full glory. The Aurora Borealis occurs when energized particles from the sun interact with Earth's atmosphere near the magnetic poles, creating the magical, shifting colors in the night sky.

What to Expect

While the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, they are notoriously difficult to predict. This tour cannot guarantee you will see the aurora, but by venturing far from Nuuk’s artificial lights, you dramatically increase your chances of spotting them, provided the sky is clear enough.

  • Unpredictable Nature: Northern Lights are unpredictable, occurring between 100-500 km above the Earth's surface, while clouds typically form much lower (below 10 km). If the sky is clear, your chances are better, but the lights themselves are a fleeting, natural wonder that requires a bit of luck.

  • Weather-Dependent: The boat will only set sail if weather conditions allow, and the sky is reasonably clear. If the forecast turns cloudy or the conditions aren’t ideal, the tour will be canceled at the last moment, and you will be offered a full refund or the opportunity to reschedule for another date.

There’s something truly magical about being out on the cold waters, with the dark fjords surrounding you and the chance to witness the Northern Lights. Whether or not you’re lucky enough to see the aurora that night, the experience of being in the Arctic night, away from light pollution, is unforgettable. The peaceful atmosphere and the chance to contemplate the vastness of nature is something you won’t soon forget.

So, if you’re visiting Nuuk and dream of seeing the Northern Lights, this boat tour offers a chance to do so in a way that blends adventure with awe, peace, and a bit of Arctic magic.

Don’t miss out on this unforgettable Arctic experience!
