Pontocho, the atmospheric entertainment and riverside dining district in Kyoto is the perfect destination for culture fans. Just steps away from the Kamogawa River, Pontocho mixes traditional wooden buildings adorned with red lanterns bearing the district's emblem of a white plover. It has an array of bars and restaurants that appeal to gourmands and culture experts alike, and if you visit in spring you may even catch a glimpse of geishas on their way to an appointment amid the annual Kaburenjo Theater's Kamogawa Odori dances. If you are looking for a truly unique experience, head to Pontocho this summer for one of an array of cuisines such as Kyoto kaiseki, sumibiyaki and yakitori, sushi, tempura, Italian, French, and Asian all served up with the beautiful view of the Kamo River.
