The waterfall is with its 120m height, the 3rd highest waterfall in the country after those of Glymur and Morsárfoss in the park of Skaftafell. Its height allows it to be seen from road 931 about thirty kilometers from Egilsstadir. Hengifoss is also considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country.

Most visitors to Hengifoss pass through the small town of Egilsstaðir. From here, you have to take road 931 in a southerly direction which runs along Lake Lagarfljot.

30 km further, at the end of this same lake, you have to turn right still on the 931 to cross to the other side of the shore.

Finally, at the end of this road, you have to take the 933 which turns left and it is a few hundred meters further on that the car park of the waterfall is located.

The hike starts from this car park, there are some indications for hiking, as is very often the case in Iceland.

From the parking lot, you have to take a short hike to get to the waterfall because even if there is not a great distance between the parking lot and the fall (about 2.5 km), the elevation gain is 270 m and the sometimes uneven terrain.

It will therefore take 1 hour 15 minutes to reach the foot of Hengifoss. Some passages are muddy and some small streams will also have to be crossed to reach it.
