Ilha da Gigóia is a hidden gem in Rio de Janeiro, rarely visited by international tourists. It is located in Barra da Tijuca and the only way to access the island is by local boat. There are two main crossing points and you'll have to pay a small fee for the boat.

The island is car-free and it is known for having nice local restaurants. I love the vibe here, it feels like you traveled far from the city while still being within Rio.

Pro tip: Make sure you bring mosquito repellent
