The Ljubljana Castle has been a part of Slovenia’s history for over 900 years and is one of the most iconic landmarks in the country. Located on a hill overlooking the city center, the castle is not only an important cultural center, but it also holds a very interesting past.
The castle and the fortress were first mentioned in the 12th century as “castrum Laibach”, which is Ljubljana in German. At the time, the castle was most likely just a wooden building and served as a noble home. Over the years, it has changed hands many times and was rebuilt and rearranged based on the current needs. The one part of the castle that is best preserved is the Chapel of St George, which dates back to the 15th century and is accessible from the inner courtyard.
Pro tip: You can enter the main courtyard of the castle for free and see the view from one of the side walls. If you want to continue exploring the rest of the museum, then you'll need to get a ticket, which will also allow you to climb the tower.
Ljubljana Castle is one of the best places to watch the sunset in town!
