Amalfi is an enchanting town located in Campania and the town that gives the name to the stunning Amalfi Coast. The town lies at the mouth of a deep ravine, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and beautiful coastal scenary. It was one of the maritime republic known as the Duchy of Amalfi (its flag, the white cross and blue background, it's part of Italy's naval ensign)
Amalfi is the perfect base for anyone that wants to visit several towns in the Amalfi Coast due to its location. The town is centrally located reducing the time of your trips dramatically as you are only a 30 minutes ride away from most towns on the coast.
Amalfi is a popular place and during the summer is extremely crowded, so if you are looking for a more relaxing holiday, I wouldn't recommend staying here.
In the summer the town is lively during the day and also in the evening.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: If you want to use the bus to move around the coast, Amalfi has all the busses that brings you north (to Positano, Sorrento and even Naples) or south (to Ravello, Maiori, Cetara and Vietri). You'll likely have to change busses here, if you're going for example from Maiori to Positano.
FERRIES: Ferries stops in Amalfi and it's a quicker way to move around. If you're coming to the Amalfi Coast from Rome or Naples for example, taking the ferry from Salerno to Amalfi is a great way to save time.
