Hike
2-3h
The Morteratsch glacier is about seven kilometres long, making it the longest glacier in the Engadine. An equally impressive spectacle of nature are the others glaciers in the region such as Roseg, Tschierva, Sella and Pers glaciers.
IMPORTANT: the glacier caves are only accessible in winter and even then, do not go inside if you have informed yourself first with the local tourism office it is "save" enough. Usually when the Pontresina Bergsteigerschule runs their snowshoe tours to the cave it is save enough. And really also just visit before lunchtime because it get's too hot in the afternoon and you always stay at risk that they collapse.
From the Morteratsch train station it is about 1:30h to the beginning of the glacier and usually after the steep ascent you start to see some caves. It really depends a lot on how much snow there is and if they still exist from the previous year.
anyway. I recommend you to plan such a visit some time in January when there is enough snow and cold outside.
