Karpathos, like many other Greek islands, is a summer destination. From mid-April, tour operators start flying again until around mid-October. As far as we are concerned, late September is best: temperature top, seawater top, but the season is heading towards the end so it is a lot quieter. Karpathos is located nicely in the south, so compared to the northern islands, it is also warm here for longer. Below is an overview of what to expect per month.

April

From the end of April, several European countries start flying directly to the Greek islands again, including Karpathos. Usually, the first Dutch flights from TUI and Sunweb are around the 24th of April.

In terms of weather, the best we can say is that April does what it wants. It can be summery one day and rain and clouds the next. Expect around 20°C. The sea water is still fresh, but you can swim. Not everything is open yet, as the season hasn't started yet. Don't forget to bring a cardigan or jacket for the evening either: it cools down quickly! By the way, this is the perfect month if you like hiking.

May

From the beginning of May, more and more businesses open and the weather gets warmer too, although you may still encounter some rain. A jacket and long trousers are still recommended in your suitcase, as it can still be a bit chilly in the evening. This month is also really perfect if you want to hike, as it's not too hot yet. Expect around 20°C -25°C. The sea water is getting warmer by the day and there are not that many tourists yet.

June

This is a good month to visit Karpathos. It is getting busier on the islands but not yet peak crowds. The seawater is lovely and temperatures can also reach 30°C in no time.

July and August

These months are similar. They are the busiest of all the months and also the hottest with temperatures easily reaching 30°C-35°C. Don't like the top crowds, but still can't get out of the summer holidays? Then choose July rather than August. Many Italians and American Greeks arrive in August, and the 15 of August is a big bank holiday (Holy Mary). This makes the island most crowded around mid-August.

September

As far as we are concerned, this is the best month, although early September can still be busy. From mid-September onwards, it gets more quiet. However, the weather is still great as is the water temperature is great!

October

The weather during this period is often top notch too: nice water and around 25 degrees during the day. However, it does cool down more in the evenings, so bring that cardigan if you come up this can!

The seawater

The seawater in winter in Greece is around 16°C. From April onwards, the water slowly gets warmer and the warmest months in terms of sea water are August and September. Temperatures can quickly exceed 25°C! From the end of May onwards, the water is nice for swimming. Until then, the water can still be a bit fresher, but still suitable for swimming for those who want to.

November - April

November and December are often lovely months too! It stays around 20 degrees and you can still swim just fine. It is a lot quieter on the island and there are no more direct flights. January is variable, but February and March are often the coldest. Especially when the wind blows hard it can be around 8°C- 12°C sometimes. In April, the temperature slowly rises again.
