In the Greek island group the Dodecanese, you will find the island of Karpathos. It lies between the better-known islands of Crete and Rhodes. It is one of the largest islands in the archipelago but is not yet so touristy.

The island is known as an island for hikers, but Karpathos' beaches are also not to be missed! We'd say that Karpathos is perfect for couples looking for an active and sunny holiday and want to visit an island that is not too touristy.

The island has a diversity of nature and landscape. This makes it perfect for hikers, especially in the months when it is not yet too hot like March, April, May, October and November.

Prefer to go to one of the deserted beaches? You can do that too on Karpathos! The island has a diversity of beaches. From sandy beaches to pebble beaches to the perfect snorkelling spot or the beach with the high waves: there is something here for everyone. Yes, the famous beaches are quite crowded in high season, but even then you can still find (almost) empty beaches scattered around the island.

Did you know that Karpathos is also one of the world's best hotspots when it comes to windsurfing? In the village of Afiartis, the wind can be quite strong, especially in July and August. So perfect for windsurfing!

When is the island 'open'?

This might sound a bit weird because, of course, a country is always open. However, the Greek islands focus mainly on May to September.

You can still come to the island from October - April but there is just less open. Of course, people live here all year round so there are often still a few places open for the locals. However, don't expect any opportunities for boat trips in mid-October, for example.

From mid-May, you can expect everything to be open on the island. The season then lasts until early October. Usually several businesses close so between 30 September and 8 October. Especially in villages like Arkassa and Amoopi. In Pigadia, there will still be plenty open that month, but keep that in mind. You can assume that as long as the tour operators are still flying directly to the island, there is still plenty open.
