Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness, is a temporary condition that occurs when a person ascends to a higher altitude too quickly. At higher altitudes, the air pressure is lower, which means there is less oxygen available. The body may not have enough time to adjust to these changes, leading to symptoms such as:

  • Headache

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Shortness of breath

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue

  • Insomnia

  • Loss of appetite

  • Swelling in the hands and feet

What can you do to prevent altitude sickness?

To prevent altitude sickness, you can gradually ascend to higher elevations, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol and heavy exercise. You can also take medicine to help prevent altitude sickness.

  • Get acclimated at lower elevations before going up in elevation. When you arrive in Cusco, which is at 11,152 ft, you will want to spend a couple of days acclimating before going to Rainbow Mountain which is at 16,522 ft.

  • There is medication you can take to help with altitude sickness. When you arrive in Cusco, be sure to visit a pharmacy (farmacia) and grab 'Sorojchi Pills', also simply known as altitude sickness pills, this will help alleviate the symptoms of altitude sickness. You do not need a prescription to obtain them.

  • Have some Coco Tea. Coca tea is a traditional drink in Cusco, Peru that's made from coca leaves. It's often recommended to help with altitude sickness, which is common for visitors to Cusco.
