The Castle of the Moors is a hilltop medieval castle located in the central Portuguese civil parish of Santa Maria e São Miguel, in the municipality of Sintra, about 25 km northwest of Lisbon.
At the Castelo dos Mouros, adventurers can discover the ruins of a once mighty Moorish castle that defended the Sintra region from 8th to 12th centuries. Located on high ground, the strategic view was one the Moors loved and it inspired King Ferdinand II to partially restore the majestic battlements and create a "showpiece." Now offering both serene views and exciting sights such as the Torre Real lookout tower, the old chapel, silos, and cisterns, this castle truly has something for everybody. To explore these wonders, visitors should take the 434 tourist bus up the hill from Sintra town (see parking and traffic warning above). The entrance fee is €8.00/€6.50/€6.50 (adult/child/senior), while peak hours tend to be around lunch time and early afternoon. What an amazing adventure awaits at the Castelo dos Mouros!
