The Istana Besar in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, was built in the late 19th century as the official residence of Sultan Abu Bakar. Despite its lavish European-style furnishings and decorations imported from London, the Sultan preferred to stay at his estates in Singapore. Today, the palace is mainly used for official functions and part of it houses the Royal Abu Bakar Museum, showcasing artefacts of the royal family.
