The Castle of Óbidos is a well-preserved medieval castle located in the civil parish of Santa Maria, São Pedro e Sobral da Lagoa, in the municipality of Óbidos, Portuguese District of Leiria.

The Castle of Óbidos is a well-preserved medieval castle located in the civil parish of Santa Maria, São Pedro e Sobral da Lagoa, in the municipality of Óbidos, Portugal. With Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Manueline influences spread over two main areas--the Castelejo and intramural district--the 79-metre-high fortress has been standing since 1148 when it was conquered by forces under Afonso I of Portugal. The walled area around it was strengthened in 1513 with a donation from Manuel I of Portugal while between 1932 and 1948 served as a monument to be transformed into a pousada. An aqueduct built by Catherine of Austria in 1521 still supplies water to fountains inside the citadel and visitors can explore both its interior and exterior, including the double polycentric arches on the Palace of the Alcaides. It truly offers a wonderful spectacle for any history enthusiast!
