The Frederic Marès Museum is one of the most important sculpture museums in Spain and, therefore, in Barcelona. It is located in a former palace in the Barri Gòtic district, just behind La Seu Cathedral. The museum houses the collection of Frederic Marès and significant Spanish sculptures from the 12th to the 19th century.

The history of the museum began in 1944 when Frederic Marès stipulated in his will that he would donate his collection to the city after his death. Two years later, in 1946, he had rented his first space for a museum. It quickly became apparent that this was not enough for his extensive collection, leading him to require three floors in 1952. It wasn't until 1970 that his collection ceased growing, reaching its current and final size. The Frederic Marès Museum moved to its current location in 1999, where everything is now on display.

Every year during the Christmas period, you can find a traditional nativity scene in the courtyard, changing themes each year. If the often more modern nativity scene at Plaça Sant Jaume (next stop) doesn't suit your taste, this is a beautiful alternative.
