I absolutely love these falls, they’re such a hidden gem with their secluded, overgrown vibe and serene surroundings. Leura Falls are a bit of an adventure to reach, but it’s totally worth it. The secret infinity pool at the top has gained quite a bit of attention thanks to social media, but I want to focus on how to get to the base of the falls, which many people overlook.
Here’s how to get there, I started at the Leura Falls picnic area and followed the Prince Henry Cliff Walk before veering left onto the Fern Bowen Track. If you’re looking for a quicker route, you can also start at the car park on Cliff Drive (33°43'16.9"S 150°19'10.6"E), which is closer to the Fern Bowen Track.
On the Fern Bowen Track, you’ll pass by Lila Falls and come to a junction with the Amphitheatre Track. Stay on the Bowen Track here. Soon after leaving Lila Falls, you’ll hit an unsigned part of the trail. Look for a trail sign that points towards “Leura Forest To Federal Pass & Dardanelles Pass” and “Katoomba/Leura.” A rougher trail will head uphill on your left, it's easy to miss if you don’t know to look for it, so keep your eyes peeled.
You’ll come across a warning sign indicating the track is unmaintained. From here, you’re just 300 meters from the base of the falls. The path is narrow and can be prone to rockfall, so it’s best to avoid visiting right after heavy rain. After a short 2-meter climb down a slightly crumbly section (with plenty of tree roots for support), you’ll find yourself at the bottom of the falls. The entire walk from the start to the falls is about 1.7 kilometers one way. The falls here are so beautiful so soak it all in. I then followed the same route back up.
