The Aradena Gorge, located in southwestern Crete, is a fabulous natural canyon. It offers dramatic landscapes, wild terrain, and a touch of history. It's one of the more popular hikes but much quieter than Samaria, Imbros or Agia Irini. There are several tricky passages that require less experience and concentration going up then going down.
Here’s what you need to know:
Getting There & Parking
Location: The gorge is near the village of Anopolis, about 84 km from Chania and 14 km from Hora Sfakion.
Parking: While you can park your car near the historic Aradena Bridge (also known as the "Iron Bridge"), note that this is the hike's starting point. If you park here, you will need to hike back up to retrieve your vehicle.
Pro Tip
Bring enough water with you, sturdy shoes, sunscreen. Avoid the busy summer months and do not hike when it's raining.
A more convenient option is to park in Chora Sfakion. From there:
Take a taxi to the Aradena Bridge to start your hike.
At the end of the hike, take a boat from Marmara Beach back to Chora Sfakion, where your car will be waiting.
This option avoids the need to backtrack uphill and simplifies your journey.
Starting the Hike
The main hike begins at the Aradena village near the bridge. Descend into the gorge using the stone-paved trail.
Plenty of shade in the beginning due to the high cliffs.
The trail stretches approximately 7 kilometers and usually takes around 3-4 hours to complete, depending on your pace and experience level.
The hike ends at the small beach of Marmara, where you can relax or enjoy a swim.
