Just starting to plan your visit and wondering what is the best time to visit Canadian Rockies? Well, it all depends on the experiences and activities you’re looking for!

Summer is generally the busiest and most popular time to visit, but with so many unique experiences these mountains have to offer, you really can’t go wrong with a trip to Rockies. Let’s break down each season so you know what to expect:

Spring

Spring in the Canadian Rockies is more or less non-existent, as the region transitions quickly from winter to summer and it's not unusual to see a snowstorm in April.

Hiking typically isn't possible until June, and higher glacial lakes often don't thaw until late May or early June. However, the weather is generally milder and it can be a good time to visit if you're looking for more peaceful experience with fewer crowds. And the spring skiing with warmer temperatures is excellent.

Summer

Summer is undoubtedly the busiest time in the Canadian Rockies.

From late June to early September, the weather is typically amazing, with warm temperatures and clear skies ideal for hiking, camping, paddling and other outdoor activities. This is also when the lakes are at their most stunning, with vibrant blue waters that attracts visitors from the whole world. The prices are at their highest and you need to make sure to book everything in advance.

Fall

Fall in the Rockies is superior, however, it is more of a window of a few short weeks rather than a full season.

The larch trees typically turn bright yellow between late September and October, and in our opinion, it's the best time for hiking in Rockies. After that, things shift into winter quickly. In fact, the ski resorts typically open in the first half of November! If you're lucky, there is a chance to experience wild ice skating on lakes with clear ice. This typically occurs in late November, but only if conditions align.

Winter

Due to the elevation, winter in the Rockies can last up to 6 months, leaving only a short window for the shoulder seasons.

It can start as early as late October and lasts until mid April, with skiing often continuing until the end of May (yes, you read that right). However, the prime conditions for winter sports usually last from December to March.

While things can still get busy during major events or national holidays, the crowds are nothing compared to the summer peak season.
