bericht van Kieran - Exploring Scotland

The Uig Chessmen, also known as the Lewis Chessmen, are a set of intricately carved chess pieces discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. These unique and well-preserved pieces, made from walrus ivory and whale teeth, date back to the 12th century and include kings, queens, knights, bishops, warders, and pawns. Some believe they were used by Vikings for strategic games during long winter nights. Six of the chessmen are now displayed in the Museum nan Eilean in Lews Castle, Stornoway, with one recently selling for a whopping £795,000. Keep an eye out on the beaches around Uig for any missing pieces - you never know what treasures you might find!
