Fushimi Inari Taisha is a famous Shinto shrine in Kyoto known for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates that wind through the forested trails of Mount Inari. Dedicated to Inari, the god of rice, this shrine is also home to fox statues, believed to be messengers of Inari. Visitors can explore the main shrine buildings, make offerings, and embark on a hike up the mountain to enjoy panoramic views of Kyoto. Don't forget to try local dishes like Inari Sushi and Kitsune Udon along the way!

This icon of Japan was one of the most crowded places we visited but would still highly recommend visiting. Interestingly the writing on the pillars of the almost 10000 torii are actually 'donations' by Japanese business to have their name on it!

TIPS to avoid crowds:

- Go higher up (most of the crowd gets stuck in the beginning) hike up a bit and see the tori gates in the upper section

- Come early in the morning (before 8am or after 4pm)
