Iceland packing list
Traveling in the winter and summer can be quite different. Even though it’s not super hot in the summer in Iceland, you will definitely not need a parka in during the months May to August. But in the winter on the other hand, you will need to make sure to pack gloves, hat and a warm jacket. It’s not just the temperature that gets to you, but it’s usually the combination of wind, rain/snow/sleet and temperature that really gets cold. On the other hand, in the summer you will want to make sure to bring a sleeping mask as it is bright almost 24/7.
Here is a list of important things you need to pack:
Backpack to store your daily gear
Reusable water bottle - remember Iceland has some of the worlds best tap water and in many rivers you can drink the water as well
Hiking boots (ideally waterproof to some degree)
Waterproof jacket such as a gore-tex jacket or waxed cotton
Layers of short- and long-sleeved shirts and sweaters
Long underwear (winter)
Warm sweater. If you forgot to bring one - consider buying an Icelandic sweater. It's usefull all year round!
Hiking pants
Gloves, hats
Swimsuit + towel
Parka (mostly from November to March). For the remainder of the year windproof jacket and layers is typically enough.
Sunglasses
Sleeping mask (mostly if you’re traveling in the mid summer with midnight sun)
Camera gear
Drone (for Instagram savvy travellers)
Tripod (if you want to photograph the Northern Lights)
Sleeping bag and pillow (for campers)
