Elgsnes is a charming village located in Harstad Municipality, Norway. Situated on a narrow peninsula overlooking the Andfjorden, this historic village has been inhabited since the early Stone Age, with archaeological finds dating back thousands of years. Start on RV83 heading out of Harstad towards Borkenes.
Drive straight through the roundabout at Samamoa (near the Shell station) and continue on Fv867 in the direction of Ervika.
At the intersection in Ervika, proceed straight and follow Fv1 to Høgda.
At the Høgda intersection, turn right onto Fv2 and cross the Aunfjellet mountain pass until you reach the intersection at Ytter-Aun.
Turn left and follow the road all the way to Elgsnes.
Travel time: Approximately 35 minutes from Harstad to Elgsnes.
The Elgsnes Battery is a fascinating historical site from World War II. It consists of:
Cannon positions
Command bunkers
Shelters
Anti-aircraft positions
House ruins
A cave (caution is advised when exploring)
In addition to the historical elements, visitors can enjoy the beautiful sandy beach starting near the parking lot. The beach is perfect for a peaceful stroll and offers fantastic views of the coastline.
On your way down from Aunfjellet, make sure to take in the spectacular views over Toppsundet and Grytøya. The road also passes by the Hans Egede Memorial Chapel and the striking mountain Elgen, which adds to the area's natural charm.

Walking Distance: 50–150 meters from the parking lot to the battery.
Notes:
Some light climbing is required to reach the positions.
Beware of tall grass and slippery trails, especially in wet conditions.
