Oceanário de Lisboa ("Lisbon Oceanarium") is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city of Lisbon. It was inaugurated in 1998, in the context of Expo 98, the last world exposition of the 20th century.

A visit to the Oceanarium provides contemplation of biodiversity and contact with nature, but it is also an opportunity to dive into yourself. When one is faced with the idea of immensity and infinity of the oceans, one realizes how small he/she is, as well as his/her thoughts and everyday problems. Spending a few hours here is certainly therapeutic and has an intangible impact on the soul.

The Lisbon Oceanarium has a large central aquarium with 5 million liters of salt water, in addition to four smaller peripheral reservoirs, located at the corners of the structure, emulating the habitats of the North Atlantic, temperate Pacific, tropical Indian Ocean and Antarctic Ocean. The five underwater spaces are separated by large acrylic panels that create the illusion that these are all a single space.

The Oceanarium has more than 8,000 living organisms including birds, invertebrates, fish, amphibians and mammals, as well as plants and algae, totaling more than 500 different species. The visit takes place on two levels, going around the central aquarium, which always reappears offering a new chance of observation and wonder. Its recurrence and repetition along the route perhaps reminds us of the omnipresence of the seas on the planet, which should not even be called "Earth" because more than 70% of its surface is covered by water.

The focus of the Oceanarium is on the education and awareness raising around the preservation of nature and changing human habits that only put the existence of species at risk... Including ours! A visit to the Lisbon Oceanarium is well worth it, although it is not a cheap experience... The regular ticket currently costs 22€. Babies between 0 and 2 years old are free, children between 3 and 12 years old pay 15€ and people over 65 years old pay 17€. It is also possible to purchase an individual annual free pass for 35€, which may be advantageous.

The aquarium receives around one million visitors annually and is the materialization of the theme of Expo 98, whose slogan was "The Oceans, a heritage for the future".
